Just a heads up--I just saw that Dave Alvin has been added to the Archive, there are 10 shows (hopefully more to come). In the event you are not familiar, Dave is a great singer/songwriter/guitar slinger in the roots rock, Americana vein. He was a founding member with his brother Phil of the seminal LA rockabilly band The Blasters, and has been putting out great records on his own for the last 20 years or so. Slugging it out in bars and on independent labels, he is a working man in every sense, and his songs reflect that. Check him out...

Great matrix recording.
His most recent CD is a tribute to California songwriters and includes Loser by a couple of our favorite Californians.

I hope I did the cut and paste right so you could easily link (first time I tried to post a link).

Hey Sac--question for you: for years I had a radio recording from Farm Aid in 86, I think, of the Blasters doing a three song set, with one song titled, I think, the boll weevil song...? Been looking for that one song ever since, especially that version, but no luck...

Am I imagining this? Any insights appreciated.

Mr. Tell--I have no insight for you (sorry). I just went through the Blasters discography and found nothing. I know of the performance at Farm Aid, but I don't know any details. Wikipedia shows Farm Aid on July 4 1986, but does not include the Blasters on the (apparantly partial) list of performers. The Blasters web site has no info for gigs on 4/4/86, but it does mention them playing the 2nd annual Farm Aid concert. It looks like The Boll Weevil song was written by Eddie Cochran (so that fits for the Blasters), and lyrics contain verses about the farmer and the boll weevil (so that fits for Farm Aid). It also appears that Dave had left the band in April 86, so no DA at Farm Aid.

Sac--thanks so much for the tremendous effort you put into this...For years I played that tape (should've, could've, would've made a BACKUP!?!), and the 3 mins was amazing energy, just literally blasted you away...now I fear it was my imagination, and if I found the song, would lament the reality as less than the memory, BUT willing to risk it!

Have looked far and wide for compilations of that show (the DEAD played too, that is why I taped, I think, but they sucked by comparison to those three short songs).

FYI, I grew up to the southwest of you...

My guess is it was NOT your imagination--The Blasters are nothing if not passionate, balls-to-the-wall rock. Tremendous energy. Still around, banging away in the clubs. They've done a few reunion tours (02 & 04, I think) with Dave, but he and brother Phil are famously combative (much like the Davies brothers), and can only share the same stage occasionally. I googled The Boll Weevil Song, and I'm sure you can DL or stream any number of versions--just NOT The Blasters from farm Aid, I'm afraid. There are a couple of guys that are reachable from the Blasters website http://www.davealvin.com/blasters/index.html and they may be able to help you find a recording. Billy Davis runs the Blasters Newsletter, and Scot (?) is the webmaster try http://www.davealvin/comment/
Good luck!
SW of Sac--East Bay, right? I grew up in San Mateo, been in Sac since 90.

Take the time...he's great. Rick Estrin is almost always at his shows at the Palms, and has gotten up and blown some harp a few times. DA is a fave of mine--great writer, better player. He can flat out play that beat up old Strat! We kinda had a running joke with him from the audience...one of us would holler out Dark Star, and he would give us a "look" out of the corner of his eye. One time he said, "Don't tempt us with the Dark Star", and then he and the band do about a minute of very convincing noodling...it was so cool, we all just about shit.
Oh--DA and Tom Russell have written several songs together--they're pretty good buds. There is usually at least one song they've written together on Dave's CDs.

Dave Alvin also plays with the Knitters, who John Doe & Exene from "X" are also part of. It's kinda the country alter-ego of punk. John Doe is from Baltimore, and the Knitters are playing in easton, MD & @ The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA next month.

Indeed he does--LOVE the Knitters. Best version of Rock Island Line EVER! I saw they were touring--coming to SF, too. DA's a real gunslinger with the Knitters--no singing, just rip-it-up guitar.
